History
The SBG was started in 2008 by Andrew Sloan, the then outgoing Chieftain of the St Andrews Society in Bangkok, with assistance from Sandy McKinnon of McKinnon and Clarke and Ronnie Thompson of Scot Wilson.
The concept was to have a casual evening where those attending could share the home country, be introduced to new people, listen to an invited speaker and leave the event with something more than a sore head, but new friends and some valuable insights.
The idea was not to be a Chamber of Commerce with hundreds of members, but a small personal group of like minded business people. Meetings would be held every 2 months as most members had many other commitments, and casual get togethers to watch rugby or football were also arranged.
For the first year meetings were held in meeting rooms at different company’s offices, there were then pub gatherings and finally we have found a home at The Pavillion at the Rembrandt Hotel.
Today the SBG has members who are part of the world wide GlobalScot initiative set up by the Scottish Government, which provide advice and support to Scottish businesses trying to enter the Thai market. The SGB has also established contacts with other groups in the region, expanding its reach and fellowship.
The SBG is still today organised and run by Andrew Sloan and the group is growing every year.
Our Mission
Our mission is:
- To create an affordable evening so the event is in reach of all business people.
- To create a core group of business people where trust and ethical practices go hand in hand.
- To create a group which can mentor and support each other.
- To be a focal point for other groups to contact.
We have no political affiliations or preferences and we welcome all to our meetings.
